Case Study : Cosmetics Industry

A renowned cosmetic giant in Europe was looking for an alternative to their complicated disinfection process for the water system and for surface and equipment disinfection.

Glutaraldehyde was used to disinfect the water system, alternated bimonthly by a chlorine product in order to prevent bacteria resistance. To disinfect surfaces and equipment, again an alternation of glutaraldehyde and other chemicals was used. After disinfection, a rinse with a 70% ethyl alcohol concentration was necessary to remove the hazardous chemicals.

The whole process not only was complicated and demanded a large chemical inventory on site, it also was hazardous to operate. Alcohol was used in great amounts, which meant a constant danger of inflammation. Moreover, glutaraldehyde and other chemicals that were used in the plant are proven to be carcinogenic and thus unsafe for humans and the environment. The need for a safer, cleaner and uncomplicated sanitization process urged the management to look for an alternative.

Huwa-San was chosen to replace all disinfectants in use. A 1% solution was used to disinfect all equipment and surfaces, whereas 300 ppm of Huwa-San was dosed into the water system. The bimonthly alternation became redundant, as well as the ethyl alcohol rinse. The 1% concentration was safe to work with, and at the same time very effective against a wide variety of micro-organisms. Another benefit is that Huwa-San is odourless and has no effect on the cosmetic products. Switching to Huwa-San also saved the company a considerable amount of time and money.

In practice, Huwa-San proved to be the best option in terms of efficacy, eco-friendliness and simplicity.
